Introduction of Short Suspense Story: A Midnight Drive
Around 11:30 pm, close to midnight, Arun Mehta was driving a car through a fog-covered highway. The highway passes through dense forest.
He was driving back to Nashik after the office party in Pune. If the weather stays clear, it will take 4 hours to reach Nashik.
But that day, the fog was so dense that the high-beam light dissolved into it.
Arun always liked driving on empty roads in peace. The cold droplets on the windshield, the humming of the engine & the sound of the wiper add sound to the silence.
Still, he felt the air was heavy & something was about to happen.

Chapter 1: The Stranger In The Night
At around 12:10 am, in the midst of the fog, Arun found a shadow waving for help.
Arun stopped his car next to the person. And he noticed that the man is in his late thirties, wearing a black raincoat & carrying a small bag.
Rolling down the car’s window, Arun asked – “Need a lift?”. The man nodded and said, “My bike broke down. I need a lift to the next town.”
Arun unlocked the door & told him to “Get in.” And the man sat in the passenger seat. The water droplets are dripping from his raincoat. He was too quiet & didn’t seem dangerous to Arun.
The dashboard light was on inside the car. Both stayed silent for minutes.

Chapter 2: The Odd Conversation
Later Arun starts the conversation by saying – “Where are you going at midnight?”
The man, keeping his head straight to the road, replied – “To find someone.”
With an awkward smile, Arun said – “Oh. Family?”
The man turned a bit towards Arun & said – “No. I am looking for someone who took something from me.”Hearing this, fearfully Arun said – “Is it for money?”
The man didn’t respond to anything & he started staring outside the window.
Arun felt something was odd about that man. His heart started beating faster.

Chapter 3: Arun Is In Danger
To ignore his fear & awkward silence in the car, Arun turned on the radio. A voice of warning crackled from the radio saying – “Breaking news. Police have raised an alert as a murder suspect has escaped tonight in Pune. He was last seen wearing a black raincoat & had a brown leather bag with him. The man was in his thirties.”
Hearing this, Arun quickly looked at the man. He noticed the man also had worn a black raincoat & his leather bag was also brown in color. Arun froze.
The man noticed Arun’s behaviour & asked – “Do you think people can hide the truth in front of others?”
With fear in his voice, Arun said – “What do you mean?”
The man looked straight into Arun’s eyes & said – “We all hide something. Even you.” Arun looked at him with a side eye & replied, “I don’t think so.”
The man asked Arun – “Today, you left the office party early. Why?” Arun’s hand started shaking while holding the steering wheel & replied – “How do you know?”
The man leaned back & said – “Your office ID is hanging on the rearview mirror. You are still wearing formal clothes & shoes.” Arun didn’t respond.
The man whispered slowly – “You remind me of him.”Arun – “Who?”The man – “The one I am looking for.”

Chapter 4: The Accident
Listening to him, Arun’s eyes stayed wide open & his heart was beating faster. Hoping to reach the next town sooner, he accelerated the car cutting through the fog.
Suddenly, he saw a dark figure in front of his car out of nowhere. Arun screamed & quickly turned his steering wheel forcefully to the left.
The car went off-road & crashed into a small tree, airbags burst open & glass scattered everywhere. Everything went blurry to Arun & his vision shook.
When Arun opened his eyes, the passenger seat was empty. The doors were open & swinging slightly to the wind.
Chapter 5: The Man Disappeared
Arun stumbled, stepped out of the car & his forehead was slightly bleeding. He asked the man – “Hello. Are you okay?”
Arun got no answer. He was surrounded by the fog. Searching the man & hoping to seek the help of passing vehicles, he walked towards the highway.
He found no one. But he found the same brown leather bag kept on the road, which the man was carrying.
With curiosity, Arun unzipped the bag. Inside he found multiple photographs of the same man with his family.
But one photo caught his attention. Because in that photo he himself was standing next to the man who was with him.
But Arun has never met that man before.

Chapter 6: Who Is That Man? Revealed
Arun was standing in shock looking at his photograph in the middle of the road.
Suddenly he heard the voice of someone walking towards him. And he was the same man who was travelling with him.
The man said – “Finally, you found it.”With fear & shock, Arun replied – “Who are you? I have never met you before.”
The man replied with pain in his voice – “You shouldn’t have left the scene, Arun.”
Arun – “What scene?”
The man replied – “The accident. Three years ago. Same road. You were drunk that night. Remember?”
Recalling the memory, Arun’s eyes went wide open – screeching tires, broken glass, a body on the road. The man came closer to Arun & said – “You ran away. You didn’t even look back.”
Arun stepped back in fear, looking at the man. The man’s face began to change – bruised & bloody.
He turned exactly the way Arun saw him before fleeing the scene after the accident.”
Arun stood looking at him in shock & regret.

Chapter 7: Ending of Short Suspense Story
After an hour, a passing truck driver saw a car crash on the roadside. The truck driver saw Arun sitting inside the car with his eyes open & he was breathing.
The driver informed the police. After an investigation, police found no evidence of the possibility that Arun was with someone in the car.
But in the glove compartment, police found a 3-year-old newspaper page of news printed – “Man lost his life in a hit & run near Nashik Highway. Family awaits justice.”
Arun survived after being taken to the nearest hospital. After the car was towed from the accident spot, the mechanic found something odd.
The passenger seatbelt of Arun’s car was buckled tightly as someone was along with Arun. The seatbelt had the fingerprint marks but it was not of Arun.
